Better Than Polycom Video Conferencing
WIREDRED COMMENTARY:
The video conferencing industry has splintered into three
segments: telepresence, boardroom, and desktop.
Good desktop video conferencing software and online
services are better than traditional Polycom boardroom solutions because they
can connect any desktop, use cost-effective PC peripherals, and given the same
dedicated bandwidth, can meet or exceed boardroom picture quality.
For example, WiredRed's e/pop is HD ready, at the click
of a mouse you can just as easily select a Logitech webcam as a Sony high
definition
camera. What's more, your meeting participants can use any camera they like and
their existing, highly variable Internet connection speeds.

Besides cost, widely available PC peripherals, and using existing network
connections for Internet access (no dedicated routes nor expensive MUXs required), there are other
advantages too. Namely ease of use, no boardroom reservations needed, and
you can get real work done with fully integrated web conferencing features such
as PowerPoint and Desktop Sharing.
Ease of UseIf you don't use your boardroom video equipment every day,
changes are you need help every time the video cart gets powered on. Let's face it,
we've all seen boardroom video equipment gathering dust. Why? It's hard to use.
Not e/pop! In fact, most e/pop customers create a virtual conference room
using their first name or email address, and just keep using the same room over
and over. To start, they click on a link or desktop shortcut just like visiting
any other web page. For video, they go to the Conference menu and select
Play-All. You see, e/pop uses a browser and office application metaphor,
so anyone familiar with browsing the web or using Excel or Word can pick it right
up. It's no surprise that many e/pop customers decline free training.
No Reservations RequiredIn addition to the convenience of a
browser-based application, you can run video conferences right from your desktop
– no boardroom reservations required.
e/pop includes NAT, firewall and proxy traversal support, so you and your
employees can reach virtually any business desktop within your organization,
plus customers, vendors and partners.
The
most popular
applications for e/pop include inter-office meetings among employees,
followed by customer-facing sales, support and training applications. Many of
the sales and almost all the support meetings are on-the-fly, your customer
doesn't need to previously install anything. If they don't have a camera, that's OK too, they can still see you and your presentation materials.
Web Conferencing IncludedAnother marked difference between Polycom
video conferencing and newer desktop solutions such as e/pop is accomplishing
productive work among line employees – not just video for executives. e/pop
includes fully integrated and secure
desktop, document and
PowerPoint sharing,
plus a full suite of web conferencing and live collaboration features. These
features can be used for productive online meetings and a variety of
web and
video conferencing applications.

Boardrooms TooNowadays, there is a PC with Internet access in almost
every boardroom. You can take advantage of that, select
high-quality
video conferencing equipment, and the result is a conference room setup far
more advanced than traditional boardroom solutions ever were. For one thing, you
can connect to any other boardroom or business desktop worldwide, not just
another room with exactly the same equipment. For another, you can have more
than two people in a video meeting, without buying an expensive MUX. Lastly,
you can save potentially tens of thousands of dollars.
